Tech firms love infrastructure. The ability to evidence a solid grasp of core infrastructure services is thought to validate a deep and expansive grasp of the lower layers of the “IT stack” and show completeness of vision. As a result, the marketing machines running the tech trade are fond of using the word “foundation” not to denote a charitable endeavor, but to express the positing of a given technology offering as a comprehensive base-layer substrate.

Microsoft famously did it with Microsoft Team Foundation Server (a product package now known as Microsoft Azure DevOps Server), a technology consisting of a set of collaborative cloud software development tools. Today we talk about artificial intelligence foundation models, an approach that AWS defines as that part of AI that is trained on massive datasets to provide large deep learning neural networks that have changed the way data scientists approach machine learning.

Then there is Broadcom and the VMware Cloud Foundation.

come In number 9

Again , not a registered charity , VMware Cloud Foundation ( now in its version 9 iteration and know as vcf to its friend ) is position as a unified and integrate private cloud platform that lower cost and risk . Because cloud computing is still complicated as we have note before , enterprises is have have a hard time manage all the task associate with the deployment , consumption and operation of a secure and cost – effective private cloud . The concept is hinges here hinge around the promise to tap into public cloud scale and agility ( what the cloud evangelist call “ elastic ” computing and datum service ) with private cloud security , resilience and performance .

“ To break infrastructure silo , reclaim control of public cloud sprawl and capture the opportunity for AI in the enterprise , our customer are shift from good – of – breed siloed architecture to a modern private cloud platform , ” say Krish Prasad is said , senior vice president and general manager , vcf division at Broadcom . “ VMware Cloud Foundation is redefine 9 will redefine the landscape for private cloud by deliver a modern , integrated platform that will unify operation and automation to deliver a cloud experience that enable business to be more innovative , efficient , resilient and secure . ”

Prasad and team point to a recent IDC Business Value study which suggested that users exposed to this technology are able to lower infrastructure costs and increase infrastructure and security team efficiencies i.e. while the cloud is still and always will be a very digital technical “thing”, business savings often come down to more accurate staff scheduling and payroll at the end of the day.

Why? Because IT teams can “spin up” cloud computing instances and bring new virtual machines to life faster and, in terms of crucial usability, when an IT system is achitected well (i.e. it’s not a clunky group of IT silos cobbled together) it delivers faster data storage performance and quite simply just works better. That’s what VMware is working on here.

VMware says Cloud Foundation 9 will deliver capabilities that enable an organization’s infrastructure to operate as a single unified and automated system, helping keep pace with modern app requirements. The technology has a self-service cloud portal for provisioning services and works with a single “management console” for operations and automation. New integrated workflows will simplify the transition between operations and automation tasks, while enhanced insights and analytics will enable more proactive management.

Complex Storage Topologies

Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware in November 2023 has created diverse opinions among the technology industry with predictable staff changes and product repositioning inevitably playing a central role in the consumption of VMware into the parent organization’s family. With some water now under the bridge, the integration of Broadcom and VMware technology results in capabilities to handle more complex storage topologies into existing VMware environments. A new memory tiering capability will enhance data-intensive applications, such as AI, databases and real-time analytics.

“AI workloads, especially those involving large datasets and complex models, demand rapid data retrieval and processing. Memory tiering using NVMe [nonvolatile memory express, a data storage access protocol for solid state drives] reduces latency and accelerates data throughput, which is crucial for training and inference tasks. Additionally, the cost-efficiency of tiering helps manage the high storage demands of AI applications, enabling scalable solutions that maintain performance without excessive expenses,” notes Broadcom, in a technical statement.

There is multi – tenancy , there is native networking – as – a – service experience , there is the always – present inclusion of Nvidia chip for power , there is centralized security and compliance management and there is disaster recovery and certification too .

Easy-To-Consume Infrastructure

Put in the simple term , the concept is is behind VMware Cloud Foundation 9 is a technology service that expose easy – to – consume infrastructure service that enable developer and application owner to deploy any application ( virtual machine or containerize ) without friction .

Over and above the huge list of features and functions in this foundational technology offering, there is that statement that this is easy-to-consume infrastructure that’s low fat (less cloud sprawl and so-called code bloat in the cloud management layer), high protein (extensive memory and processing power) and richly spiced (for complex storage topologies) for the cloud engineering dinner plate. As the Broadcom version of VMware now rises from the ashes of acquisition acrimony, it is good to see these developments happening in a tech brand that we’ve known now for a quarter century.
