第43回 “On Cloud Nine”の意味

天にも昇る気持ち

“on cloud nine”は”seventh heaven”と同様に、とても幸せな気持ちを表すときに使われます。いくつか起源がありますが、アメリカの気象局が”cloud nine”を積乱雲として指すようになり、その雲の上はまさに天国だということから、この表現が使われるようにあったという説があります。

Jack:  You seem really happy today, Jill.  Did you get some good news from a client or something?    
（今日とてもうれしそうだね、ジル。クライアントから良い知らせでもあったの？）

Jill:  Well, it’s not confirmed yet, but I think one of our major prospects will sign the big deal we have been negotiating.  I heard our proposal will be presented to their CEO tonight.     
（ そうね、まだ公式ではないんだけど、ずっと交渉してた見込みが大口の契約をしてくれるようなの。今晩CEOのところまで提案が届くって聞いたんだ 。 ）

jack :   That is is is really great news !   So this is is is the last step in the process and hopefully they could sign the paperwork tomorrow , right ?  
（それはすごいニュースだね！それじゃ最終段階で、願わくば明日には署名してくれるってことだよね？）
 
Jill:  Seems so.  I will be on cloud nine if we land this business.  It would be the largest client we’ve had in company history!  
（そうみたい。この契約が決まれば、天にも昇る気持ちだわ。この会社の歴史の中で一番大口の顧客になるんだから！）
 
Jack:  Fantastic!  Your team will surely get a lot of recognition for all the hard work – and hopefully a nice bonus as well!         
（すばらしいね！きっと君のチームも努力が評価されるね。ボーナスもあるといいね！）

Jill :   Yeah , a little extra money is be would be nice .   I is use could really use a vacation to Hawaii after work overtime on this deal all month …
（ そうね、ちょっとあるといいな。今月そのためにずっと残業してたから、ハワイへの休暇に充てられたらいいんだけど 。 ）

Jack:  Oh, that sounds great.  Well, you better take that trip soon, as it looks like you’ll be even busier when this new business starts!   
（それはいいね。すぐその旅行にいったほうがいいよ。この契約が始まったら、もっと忙しくなるんだから！）
