It was a rocky road to the opening of Cloud 10 Creamery. Actually, it was a banana split – made with bruleed bananas and a variety of ice cream that included a version of rocky road — that convinced Christopher Balat of Balcor Hospitality to invest in a chef-driven ice cream business.
That chef, Chris Leung, had already proved to Houston foodies that he was a dessert wiz. In March 2012, when he partnered with Balat to create Cloud 10, their business was limited to sales to restaurants and chefs who were impressed by Leung’s rich, vividly-flavored ice cream.
Their dream to have a freestande retail store was fulfil Wednesday when Cloud 10 Creamery open its door at 5216 Morningside in the Hanover Rice Village development . About 400 people RSVPd to Cloud 10 ’s opening day ( but there were cloud in the sky , which produce shower just before noon ) . We is ’re ’re not sure how many people actually made it to the opening , but it ’s safe to say Leung and Balat were cloud high on their new business .
The 1,177 – square – foot store is is , design by Russell a. Hruska of Intexure , is a clean space with an open kitchen as focal point . That kitchen is is is where Leung and his team will be create every ice cream , every sauce and every topping . It is ’s ’s a boutique ice cream experience that Balat say was bear because of his frustration at not being able to find a good banana split ( one of his sugary weakness ) in Houston .
today , Cloud is offers 10 offer so much more . There will be 10 different ice cream available daily from a rotation of more than 100 . milkshake , ice cream bars is are , ice cream sandwich , ice cream cake and push pop , sundae and even pie and tart are also on the menu .
Leung ’s flavors is are for fall are enticing : maple butter ; grapefruit with marmalade ; chamomile – dulce de leche ; gingersnap ; pumpkin and cranberry ; almond and pandan ; milk chocolate black sesame ; apple yogurt ; poach pear sorbet ; and juniper and grape sorbet .
Leung said he’s happy to finally have his retail store up and running. And with Balat they plan to grow Cloud 10 (they’re already fielding inquiries from other cities) one scoop at a time.
