Shadow In The Cloud: The 10 Most Awesome Moments

Awesome is certainly the best word to describe Roseanne Liang’s recent film Shadow in the Clouds . The film is stuffed full of scenes that are absolutely thrilling. While the movie has had its complaints about being silly, it’s accurate too to say that this thrill-a-minute adventure is constantly bringing the fun.

The great script by Liang and Max Landis gives Chloë Grace Moretz the chance to shine as an action-horror icon in the vein of Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor. There are some incredible action moments and plenty of great bits with the gremlin too, making this a definite recommendation for anyone looking for a good popcorn flick.

Close Up With The Gremlin

Maude’s first up-close encounter with the gremlin is terrifying. We finally get a good look at the awesome design of the creature which helps it stand out among movie monsters. Trapped in the confined space of a Sperry ball turret, Maude is kept alive by only the thinnest of margins. The gremlin attacks furiously and uses its claws to try to break-in.

After Maude discovers a loose screw keeping the trapdoor shut, she is forced to use her own finger to narrowly hold the hatch shut as the gremlin attacks, leaving her finger bent horrifyingly like a banana. This scene also features the first gunshot of the film. After dropping the bullets, Maude struggles to load one in the chamber before scaring off the gremlin off with the shot.

This moment marks a major shift in the film. Up until this point, the men on the plane have spent the entire film verbally harassing Maude. They refused to believe her when she tells them about the gremlin and about the enemy aircraft. In moments when she had stood her ground all she received was laughter and ridicule.

But that all changed the moment an enemy Japanese fighter made a b-line for the Fool’s Errand. Maude desperately asked for permission to open fire but was left with no choice but to act. “I was being polite,” she tells the captain before unleashing the full devastation of her turret. The Japanese plane is destroyed at the last second and the men on board realize that Maude saved their lives.

The Gremlin Flies

Every time we see the gremlin up until this point in the film suggests that it is not a creature that is able to take flight. We know that it boarded the plane when it was on the ground, and our various looks at the beast mostly show it hanging from the plane.

Having just dropped Taggart from the plane, the Gremlin found itself dangling by the tail. Maude brutally severs it and sends the gremlin plummeting. Or so it seems. The final struggle, a staple of the horror genre. Just when you think the monster is defeated, it suddenly springs back into the film forcing one last desperate struggle. In Shadow in the Cloud , this occurs during a break in the action when Quaid is proposing to Maude on the beach. The gremlin suddenly returns and starts making off with the Baby.

Maude springs back into action again, catching up with the monster and returning her baby safely to Quaid before taking care of the gremlin once and for all. There is not a trace of timidness from Maude, who takes on the gremlin in a brutal, bloody fight. Maude ultimately triumphs by forcing the gremlin’s claw into its own throat, a very satisfying death indeed.

But what happens next is something no one saw coming. The force of a nearby exploding plane propels her incredible back into the plane. It simply couldn’t be more unbelievable, but it’s such a fun moment that no one can complain.
