Reliance Jio has been courting international game developers and publishers for its upcoming cloud gaming service that’s slated to release after its 5G launch. Sources with direct knowledge of the matter tell IGN India that the company is looking to acquire PC content from major global AAA game companies. This is in sharp contrast Reliance’s JioPhone storefront that mainly consists of games from local Indian studios.

“[W]e’re also coming up with cloud gaming functionality where you can play one single game from smartphone, from the set top box and also same game content that you can continue on PC,” said Ashish Gupta, General Manager and Lead Games Ecosystem, Jio Platform during last week’s Gamescom India Games Market Bootcamp livestream. “That is what we’re trying to do after our 5G launch.”
We’d expect that PC game developers will have to ensure their games play nice with Jio’s infrastructure and we won’t be surprised to see Jio’s cloud gaming program launch with a focus on mobile and set top boxes to start with. Though Gupta’s biggest challenge it seems, appears to be ensuring that the content is a right fit for Jio.
“Technology plays a big role…but we also need to make sure we have content that’s engaging,” he said. “We can’t throw anything at them and expect results.”
Reliance Jio first revealed its cloud gaming ambitions during its 2019 annual general meeting where it showed off FIFA 18 running on what was claimed to be its own cloud gaming service.
Details were scant at the time outside of a single slide that had names of companies like Riot Games and Microsoft that were used to show what kind of content Reliance wanted to bring to the service, though sources tell us negotiations have only begun this year. Perhaps we’ll know more at this year’s AGM along with the rumoured JioPhone 5G and JioBook.
